- You must register no later than 25 days before election day (by October 9th) unless you participate in same-day registration during one-stop early voting which allows you to register to vote and cast your vote on the same day (details at the link below)
- If you need to register to vote or update your voter registration information, use this tool to see your options: https://www.ncsbe.gov/Voters/Registering-to-Vote
There are three ways to vote this fall:
- Method 1: Voting by mail
- Method 2: Voting in person during Early Voting
- Method 3: Voting in person on Election Day
Voting by Mail
In order to vote by mail:
- Step 1: Request an absentee ballot online here, OR print and complete a mail-ballot request form, and the Board of Elections will mail a blank ballot to you at the address provided
- Step 2: Complete and return your mail ballot
Step 1: Completing and Submitting a Mail Ballot Request Form:
- Anyone can request a mail ballot in NC
- Ballot request forms can be emailed, faxed, hand-delivered, or mailed to the county board of elections
- Email: guilfordelections@guilfordcountync.gov
- Mailing address: PO BOX 3427 | GREENSBORO, NC 27402
- Fax: 336-641-7676 (fax)
- Reminders:
- Don’t forget to sign the ballot request form!
- If you would like your ballot mailed to an address besides the residential address where you are registered to vote, provide both in the appropriate spaces
- Under Voter Information and Current NC Residential Street Address, you should provide the address at which you are registered to vote
- Under Absentee Voting Information and Absentee Mailing Address (where you would like your ballot sent), you should provide the address where you’d like your ballot to be sent
- When to send in the request form?
- As soon as possible!
- Technically, the deadline for a mail ballot request to be received by the County Board of Elections is October 27th but why wait? But by waiting until the last minute, you risk complications.
Step 2: Completing and Returning the Mail Ballot:
- You need 1 witness to watch you fill out your mail ballot and sign off
- Must be 18+
- Cannot be a candidate on your ballot
- Don’t forget to sign your mail ballot!
- Once the mail ballot is marked, you must:
- 1) Seal the ballot in the container-return envelope and
- 2) Complete the Absentee Application and Certificate on the ballot container-return envelope.
- The mail ballot may be mailed or delivered in person (either way it must be properly sealed in the envelope to be received)

If you choose to vote by mail, here’s our recommendation:
Send your ballot request form now! Then your ballot will be mailed to you by the Board of Elections at the start of the VBM period (60 days before Election Day on September 3rd).Once you receive your ballot in the mail, rip it open, fill it out, and send it right back so that it has plenty of time to arrive. This is the best way to ensure your vote is counted and your voice is heard!
